All my life I have heard people use excuses not to go to church services.
- "Those people 'pretend' to be religious, but they're just hypocrites!"
- "It's just full of gossips and people who are worse sinners than I am!”
- "I messed up so bad even God wouldn't want me."
There are many more excuses, which are supposed to be valid reasons, for not attending worship, but most are at best half-truths, if not totally false. (One person reminded me "a half-truth is a whole lie").
It's true - there are hypocrites in the church. There are also liars, fornicators, cheaters, thieves, just like outside the church. The difference is that inside the Church that Jesus established is forgiveness. People in the church are human, just like outside the church…but after accepting Christ through faith, and being baptized, they become recipients of the gift of grace and forgiveness.
Sadly, all the excuses in the world will neither save nor vindicate anyone. But, the opposite side is that God will accept anyone, "warts" and all. Think about all the old testament characters – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon…everyone of them had "warts", but with God‟s help they overcame their deficiencies.
It is absolutely true that people in the church have "warts", that is sins…but don't let that keep you away from assembling and worshiping with them. Put your faith in God and let him take care of the "warts and all".
