Satan loves to use the word “not” to tie up or bind the real truth. Think Genesis 3:4…“you surely will not die”. With one word he changes the truth to a lie. He turns the meaning from what we know to be wrong into what seems to be right with simply one word. He doesn’t need to possess us, he just “whispers” in our thoughts.
Think about the society we live in today. Satan says:
“Your body is yours…it is not wrong to have an abortion.”
“Same sex marriage…is not wrong and it is not immoral.”
“Attend church? …it’s not necessary.
“You do not need to be baptized…if you believe with all your heart.”
“Not all sins are bad…like little white lies for instance.”
See how it works. I could go on, but I’m sure you can think of many more “nots” that the Devil has tied in your life. The good news is all of the above mentioned whispers of the ‘father of lies’ (John 8:44) can be changed back to truths by eliminating “not”.
As Christians we are obliged to “accurately handle the word of truth” 2 Tim 2:15. We must be on our guard that Satan is trying to tie us up in lies to keep us from the truth, and if that happens “we will surely die.” That means we must work at untying Satan’s not’s with God’s truths at all times and in all things. And it looks like we have a lot of work to do!
