How Thirsty Are You?
Recently I overheard a gentleman who apparently had years of teaching experience describe some of the teaching methods that he employed. I thought he might be overstating his anecdotes somewhat as he referred to what he had done in one of his classes. But he made a statement that really caught my attention. As I think back on it, I realize my brain accepted the statement completely out of context. He saw it as a motivator for his class, but I saw it in a much bigger picture.
The statement I've been contemplating is: “If you give them enough salt....they'll ask for water!" He used it in motivating his students, but Jesus used it for all of us disciples. After all, Jesus used both in His teachings...salt and water. Luke 14:34..."Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned"?, and ... John 4:14...but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." Whether that gentleman realized it or not, he was "right on" with the Lord's teaching.
Our Christianity should be "salt" to the world but salt creates thirst. Biblically that thirst is the Gospel. If presented correctly to those who thirst, they will ask for water.
Acts 8:36-37... As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?"
Think about your life. Is it "salty" enough to:
1. cause a seeking of the water of life (Jesus & salvation)?
2. seek the water to be buried with Christ (Rom 6:4)?
3. seek the everlasting fountain of life into eternity?
Just how thirsty are you?
