Well, the bulldozers have finally arrived. You've probably noticed the earth moving equipment beginning their work thereby signaling the official start of our renovation effort.
We've sung "To God Build The Glory" as our theme song for the project and it's easy to think that new classrooms and new carpeting will actually glorify the Lord. Let's remember however that God is not glorified by things, no matter how shiny and new they are.
For us to glorify God with this new facility we will have to do more than just build it. We will have to honor Him in three ways.
1. Work In A Way That Jesus Worked. This project will bring us into contact with many different people who are not Christians. God is honored when others see Christ in us, in our business affairs, on the job site or when problems arise. If we can build with an attitude of kindness, honesty, patience and humility then God will be glorified by what we build.
2. Maintain Our Commitment. Only a few are pouring the concrete or driving in the nails but everyone has a part in paying for the work. You may sit in the new building some day and sing the songs, but if you've not shared in the cost or neglected your commitment, you personally will not glorify God.
3. Use The New Facility Properly. In the end, buildings are tools to be used to serve the needs of the church not monuments to our own cleverness or taste. God is only glorified if the church grows.
Let's build and finish the job. But let's remember that how we build has as much to do with glorifying God as what we build.
