In Ecclesiastes 11:9, God counsels Young People, wanting them to be happy, assuring them that they have choices, while warning them that He will bring them into judgment. Carefully note that verse:
The Appeal: “Be happy, O Young Man, while you are young.” Happy young people are a blessing to other young people, parents, teachers, neighbors—society in general. So God’s appeal is, “Let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.”
The Real: Choices must be made. Solomon mentions three areas: heart, walk, and eyes!
- Paul was relating to heart choices when he wrote to young Timothy: “But flee youthful lusts and follow after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (II Tim. 2:22). Heart choices in great contrast were covered by Jesus in Mathew 15:18-20 (that defile), and by Paul in I Corinthians 15:33 (the influence of evil or bad companions). How is your heart?
- Solomon said, “Walk in the ways of your heart.” Again, your walk—life style is a choice, affected by your heart. Paul urges: “Look therefore carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15f). Choices for a date, a mate, your eternal fate are a real challenge in prosperous America with its overflow of degrading, deceptive moral and spiritual trends. How is Your current walk?
- Solomon also mentions”...in the sight of your eyes.” So many of our choices come because of what our eyes see. In our television— internet—cell phone age, how many things, scenes, and people do we see—people in all phases of dress and undress, doing good and evil deeds. Job was choice conscious when he said: “I made a covenant with my eyes, not to look lustfully at a girl” (Job 31:1 NIV). James wrote of one “who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues to do this, not forgetting what he heard, but doing it, he will be blest in what he does” (James 1:25). What do you look on with Your eyes?
The Ultimate Deal!: Solomon gives this sober warning about our heart, walk and eye choices: “But know that for all these things, God will bring You to judgment” (v. 9; cf. Rom. 14:10-12). Think on it: You can reap happiness or horror by your choices in your heart, by your walk, with your eyes! May you select what will assure You of happiness (John 13:17 NKJ).
