The Great Index Card

When I first began attending Choctaw Church of Christ, the former youth minister, Mike Coghill, did a teen class where the teens turned in questions and he answered them. This quarter in the teen class, I followed his lead and we have been covering questions that the teens have about the Church, religion in general, and Christianity within our society. It’s been a successful class and it has surprised me. I was specifically surprised by the questions that were turned in. They all are really good and deep questions. Questions about faith, baptism, pleasing God, learning to glorify Him, their personal relationships with Jesus, why the Church functions and acts in certain ways in society, etc.

I was surprised at the teens desire to learn. They have been taking notes, taking pictures of the slides, and paying great attention as their questions are being answered according to the Word of God. Last week I forgot to refill the index cards, and many were disappointed and began searching for scrap pieces of paper to write on! It’s clear the young people of this Church have a desire to know what the Word of God says about their questions.

Parents, guardians, and mentors; the children of the Lord’s Church are asking great questions about the theology of God’s Word. They are yearning to be shaped by the Word of God and it’s inspiring. I literally witness it every Wednesday. So, I have a challenge/project for you if you don’t already do this (or something like it) in your home. Grab some index cards and give them to your kids. Ask them to write down some questions they have, any question they have about God, Jesus, the Bible, and Christianity. Then set time aside to address those questions with them (dinner time works really well). There will be several things that will happen:

1- You’ll learn your child has great questions concerning their growing faith.

2- You’ll learn your child is paying more attention than you think.

3- You’ll find your child has the capability to understand the Word of God.

4 -You’ll find it’s fun to study together.

5- You’ll find your own faith growing.

6 - They will come to you when they have these questions instead of having to wait for a class to be offered to them.

Finally,

7 - You’ll discover and cultivate a deep, Christ-centered, relationship between you and your child.

Keep pressing on, there are rich blessings abounding on us.

“Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
