Have you ever been to a Thunder game? There are thousands of people there to watch and cheer for their favorite team. You can usually tell some people are a lot more
passionate about the game than others. A small percentage of the crowd are apathetic and lack interest in what is happening. They might look like a Thunder fan, but they are just going through the motions. Their heart isn’t in the game or they might even be
silently cheering for the other team. This reminds me of the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares. There are people who are very passionate about being a Christian and there are those who aren’t.
In this parable, a farmer sows some good seeds in the field but while he is asleep the enemy sneaks in and plants weeds among the wheat. The weeds in this parable are likely the weed darnel- which is a weed that looks just like wheat but is actually
poisonous. The farmer’s servants asked the farmer if they should go out into the fields and gather the weeds. The farmer said, “No, wait until the harvest and then we will gather the tares, bind them into bundles and burn them.”
How do I apply this parable to my own life? Be mindful our job as Christians is to sow the seed of the kingdom. There will be “weeds” among us. They will look and act as we do but their lives will not show the fruits of the spirit. We are to be like the farmer’s servants and keep sowing and tending to the harvest and the farmer (God) will separate out the weeds.
Ask yourself, “Am I like the weeds that hide among the wheat pretending to be Christian when I’m really not? Or am I like the wheat, a Christian who listens to, responds to, and follows God’s Word?”
