Light or Not

We have grown so spoiled by our modern conveniences, haven’t we? Think about electricity. It has only been in usage in our homes for a little over a hundred years. Not very long in the overall history of mankind, and yet we never notice it … till it goes off!

Back many years ago, when people were first getting electric services delivered locally, two neighbors were trying to decide if they even wanted to have it in the their homes. One family said they would try it, the other decided to wait and see if this “fad” would go away.

The family getting the electricity worked very hard because they had to run all the wires, plugs and sockets themselves. When they finally finished hanging the bulbs it was time to try it out. Of course, this was a whole town celebration…everyone was there to see this ‘new fangled’ electricity thing. When everyone was ready they counted down and threw the switch. The house was illuminated brighter than anyone had ever seen.

As beautiful as the light was, there was a drawback. No one had ever noticed the dingy soot left from oil lamps and candles all over everything. The cobwebs showed for the first time, and there was dust in places no one had ever noticed before. “How filthy” was one comment overheard.

The family who had decided not to put in electricity declared they would never have that electrical stuff in their house and have people see their dirt. But the other family, as soon as everyone left, went to work cleaning up. They scrubbed off the soot, and swept away the dust and cobwebs, and even though they had been embarrassed by what the light had revealed, now their house was cleaner than it had ever been before. They were no longer living in the darkness but in the light.

That’s how Jesus, “the light”, works in us. He shines in our lives, revealing all the dirt, cobwebs, soot and imperfections so we can begin to clean the place where He has come to dwell. Rev 21:3…
And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He shall dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be among them,
John 3:19, 21…
"And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil.

"But he who practices the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."
