Did the title get your attention? What are you expecting this article to say? Do you think I’m going to talk about 900 phone numbers, or maybe pornography, or the difference in the male and female species? Nope. “Sex Sells” is the cry from retailers and the media. Perhaps I want to sell you a car, or a pair of blue jeans. How about a bag of potato chips? Surely that was what God had in mind when He created sex as sacred, right? (Not really). Evidently, not everyone subscribes to God’s plan-particularly the commercial and entertainment industries. When you see a shapely model in a skimpy bathing suit holding up a headache compound tablet, doesn’t it make you want to hit yourself in the head so you could have a headache and use those tablets? You see all the sex and sometimes end up wondering what product is being sold! If you drink all that beer and eat all those snacks thinking you’ll look like those models, better think again. (A more likely scenario is you will wind up with a body like a hippo, a face like cowhide, and looking like “death warmed over“.) We can’t even watch a “G rated” sporting event without an “R rating” for the cheerleaders. Please understand that I am not being a “prude” about sex, but I really believe that, in most cases, it is being used to shift us from Godly purposes to ungodly thoughts. Paul reminds us that we should be thinking of Godly things, setting our minds on them…“Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” ...Phil 4:8.
Sex has an important place in God’s plan for mankind...but nothing like the world thinks of it in today’s society. Think of how many jobs, careers, marriages, families and people you know of that have been ruined, hurt, or destroyed over an ungodly usage of sex. We are bombarded by sex in movies, TV, books and the Internet continuously. Our consciences are becoming seared by the immersion of “sexual content” so much so that we don’t even notice it. The deception, my friends, is the work of Satan. Satan is the father of all lies, I am pretty sure his vision of sex is not spiritually healthy for us who are trying to be Christ-like. 2 Peter 2:9-10...“then Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority.”
Look around...are there less divorces over sex? Less teenage pregnancies? Less abortions? Less pornography or child molestation? Less sin? (make your own list). I don’t think that “less” is the case. Sex is a wonderful thing when it is used the way God intended-not a one night stand, living together, or a commercial tease, but a lifetime commitment between a husband and wife. “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,”...Titus 2:11-13
So the next time someone or something is trying to entice you to ingest impure thoughts as you are watching, reading, or just conversing, use Jesus’ method-“get thee behind me, Satan“! Then, stop what you're doing and pick up your Bible and read what God really has in mind for us. Do that and you put Satan on the run. Matt. 5:8
