Crosby, Stills and Nash recorded this song in the 1970’s. It was a truly different lyric for its time. This was the time of “free love” and “if it feels good, do it” philosophies, not an unwelcome “look at yourself” and “what your life is teaching” concept. But there it was, a sermon in song title. The concept is certainly Biblical.
1. Jesus taught “God’s children” by His example throughout His life. His everyday activities continually left a pattern for anyone and everyone to follow. He used parables and analogies to show, through those stories, how we are to behave. He spoke to us about being a “light” by our deeds. Matt 5:16… In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
2. Parents need to “teach their children well” according to the Word… Deut 6:5-7…Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
3. Finally, a true story: A woman, faced with her father’s terminal illness, was trying to take care of him. He fussed at her stating that he didn’t need her to take care of him. He could “take care of himself”, (A familiar scenario to some of us with ailing parents). Her father, who was a preacher for over 50 years, was very independent and wasn’t too willing to cooperate. After much verbal combat the daughter told her father with all the love she could muster, “Daddy, if you won’t let me take care of you now, while you’re sick, how can I teach my children how to take care of me when I am there?”
Teach your children well…and the rest of the world will notice.
Titus 2:7…In everything set them an example by doing what is good.
