If you look around when you are outdoors, with the exception of a few rare places on the planet, what you’ll see is an amazing array of plant life. Trees of every description decorate the landscape from the umbrella shaped Parana pine to the fern-like cypress and the cartoonish baobab. There are also grasses, carpeting the ground with color, texture and beauty. Shrubs and bushes abound that add character, definition and splashes of color as the seasons change. Don’t forget the flowers or the vines, especially the vines with flowers like the trumpet vine that climbs harmlessly up into a host tree to display its beautiful blossoms aloft for us to en-joy. Have you ever considered that each of these trees, grasses, flowers and plants begins as a single seed. Even the largest massive redwood was first a tiny seed. For our long-term benefit, God has packed the power of life into every single seed and since the creation they have continued to cover the world with life. Also, have you ever considered how many different kinds of seeds we use for food? Every nut, bean, pea and grain is actually a seed. We grind the seeds of wheat, barley and rye grasses to make flour and then bake it into bread. We grind corn seeds into meal and then make tortilla chips (not to mention corn bread, Yum!) Rice seeds are good anytime as either a main or a side dish and oat seeds are one of the healthiest things to eat for breakfast. This of course is all by God’s design: Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. It was no accident then, that Jesus referred to the word of God as seed when He taught the parable about the sower and his seed, Luke 8:11. In the parable, some of that seed falls into good soil (an honest heart) and it brings forth a great harvest. Think of this the next time you enjoy a nourishing seed or seeds. Yes, they can either germinate in the ground and become another plant of divine design like unto the one from whence they came, or used as food, they can provide nutrients necessary for our physical health. The seed that is the word of God, however, has the power to change your life and to nourish your soul for ever! Take some time and plant some of this seed in your heart today. The harvest will be immediate and unending.
