He said His word, that is His teachings, are the rock upon which we must build our lives if we want them to withstand the storms of life:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” - Matthew 7:24
After Hurricane Andrew blew through Florida in 1992 a film crew was surveying the damage and approached a man whose house was the only one to survive on his block. They asked him why he thought it remained when all the others were destroyed. He said that he built the house himself and built it according to Florida’s building code for hurricanes. The other builders cut corners to make construction cheaper, faster and easier.
It is simple. Keeping Jesus’ teachings will keep us secure in life’s storms because it keeps Jesus in the storm with us.
We don’t worry much about storms when the weather is nice. But when the clouds begin to gather you have no place to run but into the house you’ve built for yourself. Will your house withstand the ravages of life? You‘ve seen the storms that come. You have seen hard-working people lose their livelihoods. You’ve seen strong men lose their health. You’ve seen loving parents endure a rebellious child. You’ve stood with others beside an open grave into which a loved one was placed.
No one builds for you. You build your house yourself. Build by the book and you can live securely regardless of the weather.
