Two of the definitions the Merriam-Webster dictionary offers for entropy are:
-
The degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity
-
A process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder
Entropy is the second law in the science of thermodynamics. It is not the kind of law you can choose to disobey. You and I are completely and totally subject to it. Notice from the definitions that it is characterized by degradation, inertness and disorder.
Simply put, entropy is why folks generally don’t look or function as well physically at 60 years of age as they did when they were 16. Entropy makes death an inevitability.
Entropy is also why the supposed process of “evolution”, could never explain the exist- ence of ordered life on the planet. Chaos rather than order is the reality by the law of entropy. The elements of our world do not organize themselves into life and then change into stronger, smarter, improved life.
The writer of Hebrews gives us a view of entropy:
“YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; THEY WILL PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD LIKE A GARMENT, AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED; BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END.” Hebrews 1:10-12
The only “counter” to entropy is deliberate, intelligent intervention.
This is why God has intervened in our universe with his son, Jesus. You see, entropy is just as true spiritually speaking as it is physically.
You already know how much effort it requires of you to do what is right in the face of temptation to do otherwise. You also have observed the confusion and chaos that ensues when you choose what is wrong over what is right.
Entropy means that there is a constant downward trend towards chaos in both the physi- cal and spiritual realms we know.
Now, based on God’s intervention on our behalf, you and I need to reverse that trend by making a deliberate and intelligent decision about Jesus.
