Does God Love Homosexuals and Lesbians?

Of course He does!  The entire Bible is God’s message to us all that He loves us.  But in case you’re wondering what God teaches about the practice of homosexuality and lesbianism, read on.

1. The practice of homosexuality and lesbianism is against God’s design from the creation.  God observed for us that it was not good for man to be alone, and so made a woman from the flesh of the man, to be man’s perfect counterpart (Genesis 2:18ff).  It is not God’s plan for a man to become one with another man or for a woman to become one with another woman.

2. God first showed His obvious disapproval of homosexuality through Sodom, the city whose inhabitants practiced the act to which the city lent its name.  The Sodomites were “exceedingly wicked and sinners against the Lord”, Genesis 13:13.  Genesis 19 tells of Sodom’s rampant homosexuality and God’s judgment against it, where not even ten righteous men could be found.

3. God condemned homosexual practices through the Mosaic Law calling them both an abomination and detestable acts.  He declared them punishable by death (Leviticus 18:22 & 20:13).

4. God praised three kings, Asa, Jehoshaphat & Josiah, for driving sodomites out of the land (First Kings 15 & 22 & Second Kings 23 respectively).

5. Jesus condemned divorce because it tears apart what God has brought together. Jesus’ teaching logically condemns homosexual marriage for the same reason.  Homosexual unions completely set aside the entire concept of God’s design for heterosexual marriage (Matthew 19:3-6).

6. Without divine recognition of homosexual marriage, all intimate privileges taken in the name of homosexual/lesbian relationships are fornication.

7. Jesus condemned homosexual and lesbian practices through His apostles specifically calling all such acts impure and dishonorable, degrading passions, unnatural, indecent acts, and not proper (Romans 1:24-28).  They are identified as practices of those who have exchanged the truth of God for a lie.

8. Some of the unrighteous whom we are told will not inherit the kingdom of God are fornicators, the effeminate (men playing the role of women) and homosexuals (First Corinthians 6:9-11).  They are named with idolaters, adulterers, thieves, the covetous, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers.

9. As an example of a “sensual” and “destructive heresy” that “maligns the way of truth”, Peter points to Sodom and Gomorrah and the “sensual conduct of unprincipled men”.  He said that those who are like them “indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires” (Second Peter 2:1-10).

10. Even Jude in his brief letter mentions Sodom and Gomorrah and its gross immorality, whose inhabitants went after “strange flesh” and “defiled the flesh” and as an example, were undergoing the punishment of eternal fire (Jude 7-8).

While God loves us all, He condemns the practice of homosexuality and lesbianism without reservation.  Jesus died on the cross to save us from all of our sins. We insult His grace and His love when we continue to practice or justify any of them.
