1.Choking on an ice cube? Don’t panic. Simply poor some boiling water down your throat and, presto, the blockage will be removed.
2.Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.
3.High-blood-pressure? No problem. Simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins.
4.Sleeping too late? A mousetrap on the top of your alarm clock will prevent you from going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.
5.Toothache? Smash your thumb with a hammer. You will forget all about the toothache.
These “remedies” are so ridiculous that clearly no one would choose to try any of them. In the same way, as disciples of Jesus Christ, we must also be careful to make wise choices.
God asked the following of His own people who seemed foolishly bent on choosing to put their faith in anything or anyone but Him:
“Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good and delight yourself in abundance.” Isaiah 55:2
In my speech, do I “buy” holiness and purity or do I opt for vulgarity or profanity?
Do I choose to seek the good of others over my own, or look out for number one?
When angry, do I lash out, or calmly put my trust in God to be my defense and judge of all?
Do I view myself with humility, or do I buy into entertaining an over-inflated ego?
When stressed, do I self-medicate with booze, drugs or food rather than investing in prayer and fasting?
When there is a scheduling conflict, do I choose the activities of the Lord’s kingdom, or do I cave to the demands of the world?
Of himself, Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever”, John 6:51.
So, what bread will we buy?
