Moses was 80 years old and tending his father-in-law’s sheep when God called him to deliver Israel (Exodus 3:1-10). He wasn’t expecting that.
Gideon was hiding in a winepress trying to save some wheat for his family when God called him to save Israel from their Midianite oppressors (Judges 6:1-14). He wasn’t expecting that.
Peter, Andrew, James & John were working their fishing businesses when Jesus called them to follow him, and Matthew was doing his thing collecting taxes. Saul? Saul was on a mission to persecute the church! None of them saw what was coming.
Every day we have opportunities to serve, many of which come to us “out of the blue”. No letter from heaven to explain what we are supposed to do, and the opportunity to serve many not seem “official” in any way, but it is something the Good Lord has placed in your way nonetheless.
Perhaps our “call” or opportunity, will be something directly connected with Jesus’ church, like teaching a Bible class, helping organize a spiritually enriching event or hosting a time of fellowship. More than likely, however, your opportunity will involve something more like encouraging someone who’s down, visiting someone who can’t get out much, seeing to the needs of a sick neighbor or standing up for one who cannot stand up for themselves.
While doing the above, however, remember to take full advantage of opportunities to live out your faith at home. Husbands– you are called to find ways to love your wives (Ephesians 5:25 & 1st Peter 3:6). Wives– you are called to submit to your husbands (Ephesians 5:22) and mom’s to love their children (Titus 2:4). Fathers– you are called to discipline your children and bring them up in the nurture and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). Children– God has called you as well to honor and obey your mom and dad (Ephesians 6:1-3).
God is still constantly calling us to do what is right. It likely won’t be glamorous. It wasn’t for Moses. It may even be scary like it was for Gideon. Consider also that many of the apostles lost their lives in answering God’s call.
One thing I do know for sure; there will be none in eternity who will be sorry they stepped up when God called.
