What Do We Expect of This Life?

Beware, total fulfillment is not to be found on planet earth. Nothing in our present, fallen world, will ever be just as it should be.

We often set ourselves up for disappointment by having unreal expectations.

It may begin in childhood when we believe that our life will be complete if we can just have that new bicycle, or football helmet or doll or whatever. We receive the object of our obsession, but are too soon longing after something else, after which it is something else, after which it is something else……..

Like Charlie Brown and that “little red-haired girl”, the universe will be in complete alignment as soon as she speaks to me. She doesn’t. Or worse, she does, and horror of horrors, the universe is still wacko.

Working for a living is difficult, and demanding. People don’t appreciate you. Nobody cares how you feel. Marriage is not the “happily-ever-after” you’d heard about and your children aren’t the spotless, obedient, prodigies all of the books you’ve been reading promised you. Even your spawn has betrayed you!

Be advised. Jesus was crucified because he did not meet the expectations of his own people. Even his hand-picked apostles seemed to have a skewed view of the kingdom he came to establish (Acts 1:6).

Why did Jesus say:

“Do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?........But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:25 & 33

We often become obsessed and preoccupied with our expectations of life while Jesus is teaching us to focus on eternity and his eternal kingdom!

Life at its highest peak in this fallen world, is not to be compared with the glories of eternity with God. Lift your eyes beloved. Earth is not our home, and our soul’s fulfillment does not abide here. We’ll cross over Jordan soon enough.
