“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” …….. Jesus, from the gospel of John the apostle, 8:44
Who does not value truth? The best liars want to know the truth even while they are deceiving someone else.
What does God say about the practice of lying?
“You shall not bear false witness” was one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:16 & Deuteronomy 5:20).
Of seven things that Solomon said God specifically hated, two of them were, “a lying tongue” & “a false witness who utters lies” (Proverbs 6:17 & 19). Think about that! Of only seven hated things named, two of them regarded lying.
The apostle Paul, wrote that God will reveal his wrath first against those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness but also against those who exchange the truth about God for a lie (Romans 1:18 & 25).
Another apostle, John, wrote that “all liars” will have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone (Revelation 21:8) adding that no one who practices lying will ever have a part in God’s city (21:27). John then returned to condemn those who love and practice lying a third time (22:15). While these passages mention other evils, lying is the only one so carefully identified each time.
Satan lied to Eve about God, and about what he had said. Because of Satan’s influence, Eve apparently came to see God as an antagonist, rather than a loving benefactor (Genesis 3:1-7). Their close relationship was destroyed.
One last consideration is the fact that liars put Jesus on the cross (Mark 14:55-59).
If you were God, what would you do with liars?
