Acts 5:27-29:
“When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them, saying, ‘We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.’ But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’”
In spite of the danger they faced to their health, freedom and security, the apostles kept on preaching Jesus. Their convictions were obviously against the will of those who were in authority. I would like to think that had I been there, I would have been just as courageous.
Perhaps you and I will have a very real opportunity to show such courage in the not-to-distant future.
At the Women in the World Summit, on April 23rd, 2015, Hillary Clinton said the following for which she received a hearty round of applause:
“But far too many women are still denied critical access to reproductive health care, and safe childbirth. All the laws we’ve passed don’t count for much if they’re not enforced. Rights have to exist in practice, not just on paper. Laws have to be backed up with resources and political will, and deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed”
In other words, we are being warned to change our views, or the government will change them for us.
Only a tortuous twist in moral reasoning could essentially argue in the same breath for access to “safe childbirth” and abortion at the same time. Nevertheless, if this is Hillary’s view, it certainly sounds like she intends to use the power of the government and all of its resources to force it on you and me as well.
If that time comes, will we continue to obey God?
