Imagine someone with tattoos that cover both arms. Done? Good. Now imagine an older person with white hair and a shuffling gait.
Ever see a guy in public wearing a sharp looking suit & tie, or a middle aged lady with brightly colored spiked hair?
Picture someone with a cigarette or maybe a young girl with a short skirt and a blouse that shows a little too much cleavage.
How about a couple; one black, one white, or maybe someone in a wheelchair?
Your subconscious will make judgments about people, based solely on their appearance, even if those judgments make you uncomfortable. Like it or not, we all have built-in biases. All of the above descriptions mean something to us.
The good news is that we are not slaves to our biases. Regardless of my biases, I can behave towards every individual with the love of the Lord.
Others will be biased towards you as well. Your skin color, age, sex, clothes, weight, posture and even who you are with will affect their initial impression of you and they will have no more control over their impressions than you do yours.
Jesus, knowing we must make judgments, said, “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you”, Matthew 7:2. In another place he says, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment”, John 7:24.
You are judgmental and so am I, but that's okay. Jesus says we must choose to be just as fair in our behavior towards others as we want them to be towards us. That's exactly what he does. Go thou and do likewise.
