“The Image of the Invisible God” (Colossians 1:15)

The third verse of Genesis introduces us to the word of God, “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light”.

The first words of John’s gospel in the same way introduces us to the word but now shows us that the word of God became flesh (John 1:1-3 & 14).

You & I use words to communicate and are limited to little more than that. But what if you could make your words into a body, a living being, and send that being to others? You would then have the expressed image of yourself as your mind would be revealed in that living person. They would be…… YOU.

So, rather than just telling us to love one another, God sent Jesus to show us love.

Instead of speaking truth, God showed us truth through Jesus.

As God separated the light from the darkness in the beginning, he sent us the true light into the darkness of our world in the person of Jesus (John 1:4-9).

God created life and wants to give us eternal life. As he created life in Genesis, so he sent Jesus to be the life of men (John 1:4 & 14:6).

Because it is right to worship the creator rather than the creation, he sent Jesus to show us the primacy of the creator over creation. The wind and seas obeyed him, fruitless trees withered and a few loaves & a couple of fish became a banquet for thousands. At his word, the dead rose to live again.

God wanted us to know he understands our pain, so we remember the cross & everything that came with it. That’s why it is the worst day, yet the best day of all days that have ever, or will ever be.

God wanted us to learn hope, so he raised his son from the grave.

No wonder Jesus taught us to make disciples rather than teach “religion”.
