Images of the Exodus

Exodus is a microcosm of our lives with God.

  • Israel was enslaved under harsh conditions in Egypt, so we were enslaved and dominated by sin.

  • Israel desperately needed a deliverer, so we, totally unable to resolve our sin problems, also needed a deliverer.

  • Israel was delivered by an 80 year-old shepherd, so we are saved by one whom the world would find unlikely (“a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to the Greeks”, 1st Corinthians 1:23).

  • The blood of the Passover Lamb meant life & safety where it had been applied. Jesus’ blood remains our only hope, “For Christ our Passover, also has been sacrificed”, 1st Corinthians 5:7.

  • Israel was baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea (1st Corinthians 10:1-2), So we are all baptized into Christ.

  • God gave them the Law through Moses, we have been given his Word in the flesh (John 1:14).

  • As they made their way through the wilderness under God’s care, so we walk by faith and not by sight through this world.

  • As their needs were met by God (water from rocks, manna waiting on the ground, quail enough to founder you, clothes & shoes that did not wear out, etc.) so Jesus promises our needs will also be met (Matthew 6:25-34).

  • Israel was plagued by grumblers and complainers (ten times – Numbers 14:22), so the Lord’s church still suffers from the same.

  • God eventually lead the faithful to the Promised Land, so Jesus has prepared a place for each of us and will someday return to take us there.
