What guides your decision making? Do you allow yourself to fall victim to your own selfishness, or are you guided by good reasoning based on what you know to be right?
Let’s put it in a context. Bible Class. Uh, oh. I know, I’m meddling again. But really, do reason and right rule in your God-given right to decide for yourself?
Are you the ant (Proverbs 6:6-11) or are you the sluggard?
Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in the harvest. How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise for your sleep? “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest” - your poverty will come in like a vagabond and your need like an armed man.
If you reasoned using nothing more than the wisdom God put in the little bitty ant, what plans would you begin making right now, with regard to the very next up-coming, regularly scheduled, Bible study?
I am confident that I do not need to list all the wonderful benefits of Bible study and of the edifying fellowship of other Godly people as you gather with them to nobly honor God in your study (Acts 17:10). You already know that God will bless you for that, don’t you?
I really don’t believe that I need to tell you how knowledge of the word of God and the closeness to Him that comes from the habitual, disciplined study of His wisdom immediately enhances the quality of your life, gives you restful peace of mind and safeguards you from countless harmful pitfalls that mine life’s pathway. You know all that already too, right?
I am also certain that you already see how much good, and sorely needed influence and encouragement you will be providing others who will see you and be compelled to follow your example. This is especially true of those younger than you, who are likely to pattern their lives according to the direction you take. Remember what Jesus said, ‘…whoever keeps and teaches them (God’s commandments, mjk), he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven’, Matthew 5:19.
Certainly no one needs to remind any of us of how much our faithful presence in Bible class will be a relief to our shepherds. Indeed, we are charged with making their work a joy!
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as
those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for
this would be unprofitable to you. Hebrews 13:17
How about that!? Reason teaches us that attending the Bible classes our shepherds have provided for us (and they are responsible for ‘feeding the flock’, John 21:15-17 & 1 Peter 5:1-3) brings joy to them and is profitable to us
So brother, sister, what have you decided to do about our next Bible class? Me too! See you there!
