If the Christ were to visit American society today, simply to live for a while as a member of his church, would he be comfortable with you? Better yet , would you be comfortable with him?
Have you considered the fact that he was homeless, even without a place to lay his head according to Luke 9:57-58? Would we consider him a bum?
He told people that they were wrong in religious and spiritual matters. He told a Samaritan woman that she and her people did not know what they worshipped (John 4:21-22). He even once told some Sadducees that they were in error not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God (Matt. 22:29). Would we think him arrogant?
He openly condemned hypocrites and liars. Don’t you just cringe when you read John 8:44 and especially Matt. 23? How could we expect to grow a church with such a caustic fellow telling people the truth about themselves?
Matthew even tells us that he practically drove away a wealthy young man who wanted to follow him (Matt. 19:16-22). Doesn’t your heart just ache when you think of what we could have done with that young man and all his money working for us? How could he scare off such a good potential contributor?
He was even so judgmental that he ran some people right out of “church”. John says he even used a scourge, John 2:13-17. Sounds like we’d better get a lawyer if this guy comes back.
Believe it or not he even had a problem with divorce. He only allowed for it when your mate committed fornication (Matt. 19:3-12).
Could we get along with someone who attracted tax collectors and sinners and fasted and encouraged others to do so?
If he came back, who would have to change?
He is coming back. But when he does, there won’t be time for change ( 1 Thessalonians 5: 1-11).
