God created both Adam and Eve in His image. Each of them had a divine purpose. Adam was created first according to Genesis 2:1-18 noting for us that it was not good for the man to be alone. God then made woman from the man to be his wife, but more specifically, to be his helper according to 2:19- 24. Because of the weakness of our fleshly minds, we humans tend to make this relationship competitive, but competition has never been any part of God’s plan. Equality is not the point either, as striving for equality compels us to “keep score” and leads right back to a form of competition. God’s purpose for man and woman has always been unity , the two working together as one within their God-given roles. Man, created first, was to take the lead in doing the will of God, and the woman created to be his helper was to support him in this work. In six thousand years of human history, this divine arrangement has never been changed by the Designer. Jesus introduced a lot of change with His new covenant. Just to name a few things, Sabbath keeping was no longer an issue (Colossians 2:13-17), animal sacrifices were gone (Hebrews 10:4-10), the prayers of the saints were the new incense (Revelation 5:8 & 8:3), each saint was His temple (1st Corinthians 6:19), each saint a priest (1st Peter 2:5 & 9), no more feasts but His supper (1st Corinthians 11:20-26), civil laws were dropped in recognition of national governments (Romans 13:1- 5), fleshly circumcision ended (Galatians 5:1-4), all foods were good (1st Timothy 4:4), evangelizing the nations became an integral part of practicing faith (Matthew 28:18-20), the church was the new Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:18-24), and of course Jesus is our new, only and permanent high priest (Hebrews 7:23-25). One very obvious arrangement Jesus did not change are the original roles of man and woman. One would think that with all of the other changes He made, if the original order had become obsolete, He would have certainly used the authority (all authority in heaven and earth, Matthew 28:18) He’d been given to make the change. He didn’t. In fact, Jesus perpetuated the order of male spiritual leadership. -Apostles - all men -Elders - all men -Deacons - all men -Evangelists - all men -New Testament writers - all men On a warship, there is no time to argue about positions when the order for “battle stations” is given. So it is in the church. Men, if you want to feel like a man, act like a man and step up to the plate as God has put it before you. Women, fulfill your divine role by helping them. God knows we need it. That’s why God made you like He did.
